Macho Springs Wind Project completes construction
Deming, N.M., November 8, 2011 — Element Power US, announced its Macho Springs Wind Project has completed construction. Output from the project will be sold to Tucson Electric Power under a long-term power purchase agreement.
Element Power, owner and developer of the Macho Springs Wind Farm, and Mortenson Construction, the project's general contractor, gathered with community leaders and landowners to celebrate completion of New Mexico's newest wind energy facility.
Located in Luna County on about 2,000 acres of ranchland, and comprised of 28 Vestas V100-1.8 MW wind turbines, construction of the project began in January of this year.
During construction, about 150 jobs were created providing an economic boost to the county and surrounding communities, at a time when local unemployment is about 14 percent.
The project will provide seven full-time jobs over a 20-year duration. In addition, the project will generate enough clean electricity for about 14,000 homes.
Consistent with its focus on delivering electricity generated from both solar and wind at a competitive price, Element Power is developing a 50-MW photovoltaic solar project on an adjacent site. New Mexico is among the few states where both the wind and solar resources are sufficient to allow projects to deliver renewable energy at a competitive price.
